If Allah has written Hajj 2027 for you, take a moment to sit with that blessing – then start planning early. The clothing side of Hajj is simpler than most first-time pilgrims expect: you need surprisingly few pieces, but every one of them has to be right, because you will wear them through crowds, heat, and the most important days of your life. This guide walks American men through the complete Hajj clothing checklist, from ihram sets to the thobes you will live in around Madinah.

Hajj 2027 Dates & Your Packing Timeline

Hajj 2027 is expected to fall in mid-May 2027, with Eid al-Adha anticipated around May 16–17, 2027, depending on the moonsighting. That places the days of Hajj in serious late-spring heat – Makkah regularly climbs past 100°F in May – so everything you pack should assume sun, sweat, and long hours outdoors.

Most US groups depart one to two weeks before the days of Hajj, and many itineraries begin in Madinah. Work backwards from your departure date: aim to have every clothing item purchased, washed, and tested about six weeks out. Wear each thobe at least once, walk a full day in your sandals, and pack nothing you have never actually used. Our guide to traveling in a thobe covers folding and packing so everything arrives ready to wear.

Ihram: Two White, Unstitched Cloths

For men, ihram consists of two plain, unstitched white cloths: the izar wrapped around the waist and the rida draped over the shoulders. While you are in the state of ihram you wear no stitched clothing and no head covering – no thobe, no kufi, no fitted garments of any kind. This is a condition of the pilgrimage itself, not a style choice, so treat your ihram sets as the anchor of the entire packing list.

Pack two complete sets. The days of Hajj are long and physical, and a clean, dry spare set is a mercy you will thank yourself for at Mina. Look for a medium towel-weight cotton that stays put as you walk, and practice tying the izar at home before you fly. For a stage-by-stage walkthrough – what to wear on the plane, at the miqat, and after tawaf and sa'i – read our full ihram guide for Umrah & Hajj.

Thobes for Madinah & the Days Around Ihram

Here is what surprises many first-timers: you will spend far more days out of ihram than in it. There is no ihram in Madinah at all, and in Makkah you return to regular modest clothing once you have exited the state of ihram. For all of those days, nothing beats a plain, breathable thobe – modest, cool, easy to wash, and appropriate for every masjid you will step into.

Three to four plain thobes is the sweet spot. White and cream reflect the sun and feel right for days spent in the Haramain, while a navy or black thobe forgives dust and travel wear on flight days. Skip heavy embroidery for this trip – simple daily-wear thobes wash easier, dry faster, and draw no attention, which is exactly the spirit of Hajj. At $49.00 each with free US shipping, building your Hajj rotation will not strain a budget already carrying flights and hotel bills.

Kufis, Footwear & the Small Essentials

A kufi absolutely belongs in your bag – with one important caveat. Men do not cover the head while in the state of ihram, so your kufi stays packed away during those days. Outside ihram, in Madinah and after you have released from ihram in Makkah, a light prayer cap like our Fajr Kufi ($17.00) weighs nothing and keeps you salah-ready around the clock.

For footwear, most pilgrims live in simple sandals. Bring one broken-in walking pair and one inexpensive pair of flip-flops for wudu areas and the hotel – and never pack shoes you have not already walked miles in. Add underwear and socks for your non-ihram days; our guide on what to wear under a thobe breaks down the most comfortable options for serious heat.

Laundry: Staying Fresh for Two Weeks or More

Hotel laundry services in Makkah and Madinah get overwhelmed during Hajj season, so plan to sink-wash. A few travel detergent sheets weigh almost nothing: wash a thobe in the evening, hang it in your air-conditioned room, and it is dry by Fajr. With that routine, three thobes rotate comfortably for weeks. Rinse your ihram sets the same way between wearings. The full method is in our guide to washing and caring for your thobe.

The Checklist at a Glance

  • 2 complete ihram sets (izar & rida)
  • 3–4 plain thobes in white, cream, navy, or black
  • 1–2 kufis for non-ihram days
  • Broken-in sandals plus inexpensive flip-flops
  • Underwear & socks for non-ihram days
  • Travel detergent sheets for sink washing
  • A light layer for cold airplane cabins

FAQ: Hajj 2027 Packing Questions

How many thobes should I bring for Hajj? Three to four plain thobes covers a two-to-three-week trip comfortably if you sink-wash. You will wear them in Madinah and on every day outside the state of ihram, so choose breathable fabrics and colors that hide travel wear.

Can I wear a thobe or kufi during ihram? No. In the state of ihram men wear only the two unstitched cloths, with no stitched clothing and no head covering. The thobe and kufi come back out as soon as you have exited ihram – which covers most of your trip.

When should I order my Hajj clothing? By early spring 2027 at the latest. Sizes sell through as Hajj season approaches, and you want time to wash and wear everything at home first. All our thobes ship free across the US from our Glendale Heights, Illinois warehouse, with 7-day returns if a size is not right.

May Allah invite you, accept from you, and return you home with a Hajj mabrur. Pack light, pack early, and keep your heart on the destination rather than the suitcase – the simplest wardrobe is the one that serves worship best.
