What Do You Wear Under a Thobe? A Practical Guide for Men
It's one of the most-searched thobe questions in America — usually typed quietly the night before someone wears their first thobe to the masjid: what exactly do you wear under it? The short answer: an undershirt on top, and lightweight trousers — sirwal, cotton lounge pants, or shorts that cover the knee — below. The longer answer depends on the thobe's color, the season, and where you're wearing it. Here's the whole picture.
The Two Non-Negotiables
1. An undershirt. A plain cotton t-shirt (crew neck, white or matching the thobe) does three jobs: it absorbs sweat before it reaches the thobe, it stops a light-colored thobe from showing skin, and it keeps the thobe fresher between washes. In winter, swap it for a long-sleeve thermal — nobody will know.
2. Lower-body cover. The awrah of a man is from navel to knee, and a thobe alone can lift in wind, on stairs, or when driving. Traditional sirwal (loose drawstring trousers) are ideal; light cotton lounge pants or knee-covering athletic shorts work just as well. Avoid heavy jeans — they bunch, add heat, and ruin the thobe's clean drape.
White Thobes: The Special Case
A white thobe is the Sunnah favorite, and also the most transparent. Under white, wear white — a white undershirt and white or skin-tone sirwal. Dark boxers under a white thobe are visible in sunlight; this is the single most common thobe mistake in America. If your white thobe is a lighter summer fabric, both layers matter even more.
Dark and Colored Thobes
Black, navy, charcoal, and earth-tone thobes are far more forgiving — any neutral undershirt and any light trouser works. This is why a dark thobe is the easiest first thobe: it drapes cleanly over whatever you already own.

Season by Season
Summer: lightweight undershirt + thin cotton sirwal. Choose a breathable thobe fabric and let the loose cut do its job — a thobe over minimal layers is genuinely cooler than jeans and a t-shirt. Winter: thermal top + joggers or thermal leggings under the thobe, and a Turkish coat over it. The thobe becomes the middle layer of a proper system. At salah: whatever you wear, make sure it stays opaque and covers navel-to-knee through ruku and sujood — that's the real test of an under-layer.
FAQs
Do you need special "thobe pants"? No. Sirwal are traditional and comfortable, but any loose, light trouser that covers the knee works perfectly.
Can you wear a thobe with nothing underneath? Underwear and an under-layer are strongly recommended — for modesty (especially in sujood and wind), hygiene, and keeping the thobe itself fresh.
What about shoes and socks? Anything easy to remove at the masjid: leather sandals, loafers, or clean sneakers. See our guide to wearing thobes with sneakers for the streetwear take.
