Perfect Fit Every Time: How to Measure Yourself for a Thobe
The Mystery of Thobe Sizes Solved
One of the most common questions we get at The Topi Wala is: "I wear a size Large in T-shirts, what size Thobe should I buy?"
Unlike western shirts that use S, M, L, or XL based on chest width, traditional Thobes are sized primarily by Length (Height). Understanding this simple difference is the key to getting a perfect fit every time.
What Do the Numbers Mean? You will often see sizes like 52, 54, 56, 58, 60, or 62. These numbers represent the length of the Thobe in inches, measured from the top of the shoulder down to the ankles.
Step-by-Step Measurement Guide
Step 1: Measure Your Height (The Most Important Part)
-
Stand up straight against a wall.
-
Measure from the highest point of your shoulder (right next to your neck) down to your ankles (or wherever you want the thobe to end).
-
Tip: If you want the thobe to sit above the ankles (Sunnah length), subtract 1-2 inches from your measurement.
-
Example: If you measure 56 inches, your size is likely a 56.
Step 2: Check the Width (Chest Size) While length is the main factor, width matters too.
-
Standard Fit: Most of our thobes come in a standard width that fits most body types comfortably.
-
Broad/Slim: If you have a broader chest or prefer a looser fit, you might want to size up (e.g., go from 56 to 58) and simply hem the bottom if it’s too long.
Why Fit Matters A well-fitted Thobe looks elegant and respectable.
-
Too Short: It can look like it shrunk in the wash.
-
Too Long: It drags on the floor, which gets dirty and is discouraged in the Sunnah.
